Sorrento and Capri
We took Tauck’s Classic Italy tour in 2013. We arrived early and stayed at the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria in Sorrento. The hotel had a patio overlooking the Sea of Naples. We enjoyed sitting on the patio, looking at the beautiful views, and sipping wine.
For our extra day in Sorrento, we booked a day trip to Capri. Our guide met us at the hotel and we took a ferry to the island. The first picture below is one of Capri as we approached the island. Once there, the roads were very narrow with lots of curves. One of the roads was called the Mamma Mia Road or the “Oh My God Highway.” With the narrow roads and plunging cliffs, we were glad we had an experienced driver.
Our first stop was the Blue Grotto, a sea cave on the coast of Capri. Light actually enters the cave from underneath the water and reflects off the “ceiling” of the cave, creating the blue color. For tourists to enter the cave, the sea must be calm because of the very small cave entrance. We were lucky to visit on such a day. We actually had to lay back in the boat as it entered the cave.
The island of Capri has two towns, Capri and Anacapri. After visiting the Blue Grotto, we drove to Anacapri which is the higher town. We took a chair lift to Monte Solaro. Most of the pictures that follow were taken from the chair lift or at the top of Monte Solaro. As the pictures will attest, the views were beautiful. The three see stacks are called Faraglioni and are 250 to 300 feet tall. They formed as a result of erosion, both from the sea and wind. After our visit, we took a funicular back to Capri where we caught the ferry to Sorrento.
